## The Scientists and Engineers Who Shaped World War II

This section explores the lives and careers of the scientists and engineers who influenced the outcome of the war. The **Second World War** was not only fought by soldiers on the battlefield, but also by scientists, engineers, inventors, mathematicians and codebreakers working behind the front lines. Their research, inventions and technological innovations helped shape the course of the war and transformed modern warfare forever.

From the development of the **V-1 flying bomb** and **V-2 rocket** to the breaking of the German **Enigma code**, scientific and engineering advances played a decisive role in both the Allied and Axis war efforts. Radar systems, cryptography, jet aircraft, rockets, tanks, medical research, and early computing all emerged as critical elements of twentieth-century warfare.

Many of these individuals became pioneers in fields such as aviation, rocketry, nuclear physics, cryptography, and computer science. Others remain controversial because of their association with the Nazi regime, forced labour, or wartime weapons development. Their stories reveal how science and technology became deeply intertwined with the global conflict of **1939–1945**.
