#### 9th Airforce Airborne Engineers

## Flying on memories

My husband was D-Day plus 30 and spent the entire war in Europe. He participated in 3 battles in Normandy and was attached to the 877th Airborne Engineers. Irving was a member of the 877th Airborne Engineers Aviation Battalion, and participated in battles in Normandy and Nothern France.

He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with 3 Battle stars, Glider Badge, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, 3 overseas Service Bars and the Good Conduct Medal plus the Marksman M1 Rifle Carbine badge. Irving served his country from February 1943 to February 1946. He was stationed in Normandy, France, England, Darmstadt, Frankfurt and Munich, Germany.

The 877th Airborne Battalion arrived in the United Kingdom in March 1944, and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day + 30. They built A-15 at Maupertus, which was the first field on the continent to base medium B-26 bombers and Black Widow night fighters. The 877th was engaged in construction and maintenance of 66 fields in France and Germany. Irving is deceased.
