# # Italy campaign

The **Italian campaign** of [World War II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II "World War II") consisted of [Allied](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II "Allies of World War II") and [Axis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_powers "Axis powers") operations in and around [Italy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Italy "Kingdom of Italy"), from [1943 to 1945](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Italy_as_a_monarchy_and_in_the_World_Wars#Italy_and_the_Second_World_War_(1940-1945) "History of Italy as a monarchy and in the World Wars"). The Joint [Allied Forces Headquarters](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_Force_Headquarters "Allied Force Headquarters") (AFHQ) was operationally responsible for all Allied land forces in the [Mediterranean theatre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_and_Middle_East_theatre_of_World_War_II "Mediterranean and Middle East theatre of World War II") and it planned and led the [invasion of Sicily](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_invasion_of_Sicily "Allied invasion of Sicily") in July 1943, followed in September by the [invasion of the Italian mainland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_invasion_of_Italy "Allied invasion of Italy") and the campaign in Italy until the [surrender](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrender_of_Caserta "Surrender of Caserta") of the [German Armed Forces](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht "Wehrmacht") in Italy in May 1945.
