Part 1 begins with the horrors of the First World War, the ominous outcome of which will be the prelude to WW2. The rise of Adolf Hitler, who takes Germany under the grip of Nazism, the mobilization in the Netherlands and Belgium and the German invasion in May 1940 are extensively and penetratingly shown and described, up to the Battle of France, the Miracle of Dunkirk and the first months of the war in the Netherlands and Belgium, in which the occupier still tries to make friends among the Aryan brothers. The book was created in collaboration with none other than **Matty Verkamman**, **Jaap Visser** and **Ad van Liempt.** --- The magic of coloring. Jakob Lagerweij, one of the world's best colourists, knows how to portray history like no other. By coloring a black and white photo, you give the image a new dimension. Color brings experience and detail. This makes it much easier to imagine yourself in earlier times.' Jakob Lagerweij (1973) transforms black-and-white images into convincing color impressions in which history sometimes comes overwhelmingly close.
