The 242nd Field Artillery Battalion, a crack artillery unit of the US Army during WWII, was activated at Camp White Oregon in August 1942. Edward Walsh served with the unit from Camp White to Fort Sill, Oklahoma in training and in combat in Europe. The 242nd sailed from New York for Europe in 1944 and entered combat in September after deploying from Utah Beach, firing its 105 mm cannon when and where they were needed in support of General Patton’s Third Army. Walsh recounts his experiences in training and in combat with the 242nd on its journey to VE Day. This is Edward V. Walsh's story.
