Robert O'Connor's historical novel shines a spotlight on the "Jeep shows" that brought entertainment to soldiers during World War II. The story follows Jim Tanzer, inspired by the real-life Jim Hetzer, a song-and-dance performer who joins the military to serve in WWII. Soon after enlisting, he is assigned to the Morale Corps at Camp Sibert, with a mission to entertain soldiers in areas where the USO can't reach. His captain tells him, "You'll be entertaining combat soldiers in places where the USO can't go." Among his comrades is Mickey Rooney, who actually served in the Morale Corps during the war.

Tanzer, Rooney, and their fellow performer Wes become part of a traveling troupe known as \*Hip Hooray\*, which tours New York and London before being disbanded in favor of the smaller, more mobile "Jeep shows." These teams, consisting of one driver and two entertainers, were sent to perform for troops in the most remote and dangerous battlefronts, including the Ardennes and the famous Battle of the Bulge.

The narrative alternates between past and present, offering glimpses into young Jimmy's early exposure to vaudeville and his evolving relationship with his wife, Stella. The result is an unexpectedly delightful World War II novel that expertly blends history with fiction. O'Connor provides a rich depiction of wartime life, from dramatic moments aboard ships and coping with harsh weather to the emotional toll of injuries and loss. The story delves into an often-overlooked aspect of military history: the entertainers who brought much-needed relief to soldiers.

The characters, both historical and fictional, are fully realized, and O'Connor's sharp dialogue feels authentic. Humor, particularly stemming from Rooney’s involvement, adds a lightness that contrasts with the otherwise somber setting. The inclusion of real-life figures like Rooney is seamless and serves as a poignant reminder of Jim Hetzer's real-life experiences. This engaging narrative masterfully intertwines the worlds of showbiz and warfare, balancing moments of laughter with the more poignant aspects of war. O'Connor’s skillful storytelling creates a captivating tale of camaraderie, sacrifice, and resilience.
