Joseph Walker Harris, Jr.

Date: Sat, 14 Mar 2009 Time: 10:55 PM

Joseph Walker Harris, Jr. born Dec. 18,1921 in Richmond Virginia, where he attended John Marshall high school, the cadet core, (told a fib about his age) in order  to join other brave soldiers, in protection of this great country of ours.  He served seven years in the Army from 1938 to 1945, from the National guard "The Light Infantry Blues"  the 3rd armored division, 176th infantry , of the 29th division (known as The Blue and the Gray)

While home on leave getting married, May 11, 1944, he was called to active duty the next morning, May 12, 1944 and shipped out to Normandy, "Omaha Beach" where the 29th was slated for attack. If he had not been wounded, he would have made a career of the army, for he loved the military. He was a member of American Legion, the U.S. Navy League, the Knights Commandry Royal Arch, and a life member of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars. He was a life member of of the Masonic Lodge #345 A.F. &A.m., Samis Grotto, 50 plus years, the Scottish Rite, and ACCA Temple Shrine, the faternal order of the police, and the Moose lodge#699, just to name a few.
He remained some what quiet and reserved about the events that took place during the battles until the last 5 to 10 years, then as more recognition by T.V. stations and movies, honored the soldiers of WWII, plus  showed live accounts of the battles,  did he open up and tell some of his encounters.

He passed away quietly at his home on Feb. 2, 2008, leaving me with the memory of a very brave Hero, that I thank for my "FREEDOM".

Miss you dad
